It was designated Mle 1907/15 M34 (or M34 for short) and about 50,000 were built between 19. The next conversion was the aforementioned Berthier. At last count there were 10 known to collectors. So the M27 was more of a prototype or service trials rifle. 5000 were ordered but about 1200 were built before production was stopped due to cost as it was easier and cheaper to convert a Berthier. To save cost original stocks were modified. New sights, bolt head and ejector all rounded out the extensive modifications. The barrel length was also shortened to a more manageable 23.6 inches. The Mle 1886 M93 M27 (or M27 for short) not only chambered the new 7.5mm cartridge it did so using a new 5 rd box magazine that could be charger loaded, dumping the old tube magazine. I'm also throwing in some photos of the different MAS 36 rifles I have as well.įirst was the conversion of the Mle 1886 Lebel rifle. These are the Lebel and Berthier conversions designed to take the new 7.5 x 54mm cartridge introduced with the ground breaking FM 24-29 LMG. Bored to tears on a rainy Sunday and thought I'd take the time to post some of the more exotic items in the vault.
